As windows and doors are left open more often, and homes are left vacant for longer periods, the risk of a break-in can increase. Lock snapping remains a common tactic for criminals due to its speed and simplicity. In fact, some police forces have reported that this type of burglary accounts for a significant proportion of all break-ins, with figures as high as 20-25% in areas like South Yorkshire.

The method involves applying force to the exposed part of the euro cylinder lock, causing it to snap in two at a weak point. Once the cylinder is snapped, the burglar can then easily manipulate the lock mechanism to open the door, often in a matter of seconds, and with surprisingly little noise. It requires minimal skill and no specialist tools, making it a favoured tactic for quick, opportunistic entries.
Why Does Summer See a Rise in Lock Snapping?
While lock snapping can happen at any time of year, summer presents a few key factors that contribute to a potential increase:
- Open Doors & Windows: The desire for a cool breeze often leads to doors and windows being left open or unlocked, even for short periods. This creates easy access for burglars who can quickly identify a vulnerable property.
- Holidays: Longer summer holidays mean more homes are left empty for extended periods. Burglars can take their time, knowing the occupants are away, increasing the risk of more destructive entry methods like lock snapping.
- Distraction During Outdoor Activities: With more time spent in gardens, enjoying BBQs, or simply being distracted by the good weather, you might leave your bi-fold or patio doors open.
- “Fishing” for Keys: If you leave keys in the lock on the inside of the door, especially near a letterbox or open window, burglars can use tools to “fish” them out, giving them immediate entry.
How to Protect Your Home from Lock Snapping: Proactive Steps
The good news is that preventing lock snapping is entirely achievable, often with affordable and straightforward upgrades. Here’s how you can upgrade your home security:
1. Upgrade to Anti-Snap Euro Cylinder Locks
This is by far the most crucial step you can take. Standard euro cylinder locks have a weakness that anti-snap locks are specifically designed to address.
- How they work: Anti-snap cylinders incorporate a sacrificial section or internal security features that mean if the lock is attacked, it will snap at a predetermined point, but the remaining mechanism stays intact and keeps the door locked. This makes it incredibly difficult for the burglar to gain entry.
- Look for recognised standards: When purchasing, always look for locks that meet:
- Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312): This is the highest level of approval for a euro cylinder lock, indicating rigorous testing against all known attack methods, including snapping, drilling, picking, and bumping.
- TS007 3-Star Rating: Ultion Locks with this British Kitemark demonstrate a high level of security against snapping and other common attacks. You can achieve a 3-star solution by fitting a 3-star cylinder or by combining a 1-star cylinder with a 2-star security handle.
- Correct Installation is Key: Even the best anti-snap lock can be vulnerable if fitted incorrectly. Ensure the cylinder does not protrude more than 3mm from the door handle or escutcheon. Ideally, it should be flush. If your lock sticks out, it’s an easy target for snapping.
2. Reinforce with Sash Jammers
As mentioned in previous posts, sash jammers are an incredibly effective and low-cost physical deterrent, especially for UPVC doors and windows.
- How they work: These simple arms pivot or slide to brace against the door or window frame, providing an additional, independent locking point. Even if the main lock is compromised, the sash jammer prevents the opening from being forced.
- Easy to install and affordable: You can typically install these yourself in minutes, and they cost very little. They provide a vital secondary layer of security.
3. Enhance Your Door Handles
Some security handles are designed to offer an additional layer of protection against lock snapping.
- TS007 2-Star Rated Handles: These handles are specifically tested to resist common attack methods, providing a physical barrier that makes it harder for burglars to get to the lock cylinder. Combining a 1-star cylinder with a 2-star handle gives you an overall 3-star security solution.
4. Don’t Forget the Basics
While upgrading your locks is paramount, don’t overlook fundamental security practices, especially during summer:
- Always Lock Up: Even if you’re just popping out for a few minutes, or are in the garden, always close and lock all doors and accessible windows. An unlocked door is an open invitation.
- Secure All Windows: Ground-floor windows and those accessible from flat roofs or easily climbable structures should always be secured with key-operated locks. Consider window restrictors or security grilles for ventilation without full opening.
- Keys Out of Sight: Never leave keys in locks on the inside of the door, especially within reach of a letterbox or open window. Don’t leave spare keys under doormats, plant pots, or obvious hiding spots. You can always consider a Key Safe.

- Timer Switches: If you’re going away, use timer switches on lights and radios to give the impression that your home is occupied.
